Tengrinews.kz — The basketball team Caspiy from Aktau has announced that it will not be able to take part in the next edition of the national championship. In May, the team pulled off one of the biggest sensations in the tournament’s history, citing the club’s press service.
On May 31, Caspiy sensationally defeated Astana in the final of the Kazakhstan basketball championship and won gold medals for the first time in its history.
However, Astana has since strengthened its squad and will play in the VTB United League alongside Russia’s wealthiest teams, while Caspiy has been forced to put its history on pause.
“It is with deep regret that we must announce that the Caspiy basketball club is currently unable to take part in the upcoming 2026–2027 season of the Championship of the Republic of Kazakhstan — men’s, women’s, and farm teams U15 and U21. This situation is due to a lack of funding and a current shortfall in the club’s budget,” the club said in a statement.
The club noted that it had tried and continues to try to find alternative sources of funding, but at this point it cannot cover the deficit.
At the same time, a few hours before announcing its withdrawal from the championship, the club said it had begun discussing the results of an internal analysis of corruption risks.
