Kazakhstan to host UEFA Super Cup in 2028

The match traditionally features the winners of the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Champions League. The game is held in mid-August before the start of the European season.

"Hosting a match of this caliber in Kazakhstan is a historic event for the nation's entire sports industry. The reconstruction and planned infrastructure upgrades of the Astana Arena will ensure the stadium fully complies with UEFA's strict regulatory requirements for hosting major European finals," the KFF press service stated.

It is worth noting that this is the first time Kazakhstan will host a match of this level.

This season, Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa competed for the first European trophy of the year.

As a reminder, in November last year, the UEFA press service announced that Kazakhstan had submitted a bid to host in either Astana or Almaty the Conference League final — the third most prestigious trophy in European club football.

Now, it has been confirmed that the team that wins the 2027/2028 Champions League will be coming to Kazakhstan.

Which stadiums will host other European club finals?

A statement on the UEFA website announced that the 2028 Champions League final will be held at the Munich Arena (Germany), while the 2029 final will take place at the famous Camp Nou, the home of FC Barcelona.

It was also announced that the Conference League finals will be held at Juventus Stadium (Italy) and Puskas Arena (Hungary), while the Johan Cruyff Arena (Netherlands) will host the UEFA Super Cup prior to Astana.

Astana Arena: Kazakhstan's Largest Stadium

Notably, the Astana Arena is one of four stadiums built in Kazakhstan since independence. It opened on July 3, 2009, and has a capacity of 30,200.

The arena features a retractable roof and an artificial turf pitch, with construction costs estimated between $100 million and $150 million according to various reports.

In 2025, a large-scale reconstruction of the stadium was completed. A Tengri Sport correspondent previously tested the upgraded arena.
