Kazakhstani coach faces criminal prosecution in India: MFA reaction

According to media reports, 34-year-old coach is accused of involvement with a minor. The reports claim that the victim was at a training camp and accused Ayazbayev of rape.

The Kazakhstan Cycling Federation has responded to the media reports. The federation confirmed that a criminal case has been opened against the 34-year-old Kazakh national and that the Cycling Federation of India has suspended Ayazbayev's contract.

"The events mentioned in the publications took place in India during his employment with the Indian side and are being reviewed by Indian law enforcement agencies. An official investigation is currently being conducted by the Indian authorities.

According to available information, a criminal case has been opened, and the Cycling Federation of India has suspended the specialist's activities pending the investigation. We believe it is appropriate to refrain from premature conclusions or assessments until the official investigation is completed and all circumstances of the case are established by the competent authorities of India," the statement reads.

At the same time, the federation emphasizes that the coach is not affiliated with the Kazakhstan national team.

"In recent years, Maksat Ayazbayev has worked professionally outside of Kazakhstan under contract with the Indian side, training the Indian national cycling team. His professional activities were currently linked specifically to the Indian national team. Indian media also report on his work with the Indian team and the preparation of athletes for international competitions. At this time, Maksat Ayazbayev has no connection to the national team of Kazakhstan," the message states.

In turn, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan stated that Ayazbayev's case is under the department's supervision.

"The Ministry is aware of the situation involving the citizen of the Republic of Kazakhstan in India. Kazakh diplomats are in contact with the relatives of the aforementioned citizen. He is being provided with consular and legal assistance. The Ministry is keeping this matter under control," the Kazakh Foreign Ministry noted.

It should be noted that Maksat Ayazbayev is a professional cyclist. He previously rode for the Astana Pro Team. Since 2022, he has served as the head coach of the Indian national cycling team and was expected to lead them in this capacity to the Asian Games in Japan.

The coach's current location is unknown. His passport is in the possession of the police.
